Wednesday, February 27, 2013 – Crystal Cove Walk

Posted by on February 27, 2013

Venturing away from the Malecon for today, we headed out to explore another spectacular area of San Felipe – Crystal Cove. This slightly remote cove is nestled behind Machorro and further back than Cantu Cove. It’s best to visit in a group, and with vehicles that have high clearance, 4-wheel drive is ideal, as the road is rather rough in some spots.

The Cove itself is small and a rather rocky, but the water is clear and dolphins can sometimes be seen jumping out at sea.

Overview of the Cove

The hike down to the cove is beautiful in and of itself, with eye-catching rock formations, and beautiful desert foliage, ocotillos and elephant trees as well as wild desert sage and lilies.

Descending down to the cove can be done via a makeshift staircase built into the rocks by hippies long ago. Once you reach the cove, there is a sandy stretch of beach to lie on above the rocks.
