Last night night saw a big crowd on the Malecon, celebrating the start of Mexico’s Dia de la Independencia with the traditional “Grito,” given by the mayor.

The Malecon was packed with eager spectators, and stands lined the streets, manned by local students selling tamales, tostadas and other tasty snacks to raise money for their schools. Red, white and green banners draped the streets and many were wearing Mexico’s colors in celebration.

The military set up an exhibit displaying models of the navy ships, equipment and tools for the public to see, and the traditional drill exercises were done as part of the Grito ceremony. Once the Grito was given and the bell rung, a fireworks show followed with cheers.
