Sunday, February 19, 2012 – Carnaval!

The town is alive with the sounds of festivities, but the action is centered around the Government Center on the Avenida Mar de Cortez. (Change of location this year due to Malecon construction). Colorful parades meander down Chetumal, music pours from the center stage, mouthwatering scents drift from the various food stalls, and there are beads and masks galore.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 – Club de Pesca 25Km Walk

The past weekend saw the first Club de Pesca to Punta Estrella (and back!) 25Km walk. With over 100 runners registered, sunny skies, and good food and music after the run/walk, the event was a great success. At 25 kilometers, the race was just over the length of a half marathon, and the first place time was about 2.5 hours. The walk also was a benefit for the San Felipe Cancer Society and San Felipe’s Rowing Team.

Walking/Running along the beach, the participants trailed out...

...to reach the Punta Estrella Lighthouse, where entrants turned around and headed back to Club de Pesca.

Having fun! - Juanita from "The Wash Tub" and Cyreen make their way along the beach.

Hopefully this event will continue to be a great success each year! It is definitely something new and interesting for San Felipe!

Friday, January 20, 2012 – Malecon Construction Update

Construction has been proceeding slowly down the Malecon, the seaside of the street has been torn up almost to the statues halfway, while the opposite side has been demolished up to the Sweet Spot restaurant. Cement has started to be poured at the south end, by the Costa Azul hotel and the beginnings of the design can be seen.  Green water pipes are waiting on trailers for the workers to lay them underground, mesh and metal outlines for the sidewalk designs are being laid on the awaiting ground, and the backhoe is steadily moving dirt around.

The old sidewalks are torn up...

The ground is flattened...

Jackhammer loosens old bricks...

Mesh and design outlines are laid in anticipation of the cement...

An idea of the design can be seen in the cement work at the south end

Of course the Malecon is still completely accessible, and stores are open and waiting for you to drop in for a visit. Drive or walk carefully of course, and go down for a look to see how things are progressing. Maybe even stop for a taco or two and support your local businesses! Have a great weekend everybody!
